we'll connect you. investigators looking into friday's failed terror plots say the mail bombs were supposed to detonate in flight. they were not men the for two chicago synagogues. the prime suspect is a young saudi man known to be an expert bombmaker for al qaeda and considered extremely dangerous by u.s. intelligence officials. investigators also admit they're not yet entirely sure whether they found all the bombs sent out as part of this plot. senior justice correspondent pierre thomas has that part of the story. >> it's an active investigation. it's ongoing. we can't presume we've identified all of the packages out there. >> reporter: the u.s. is trying to block every package en route from yemen. the u.s. postal service announced it stopped all shipments from yemen. that follows a similar decision by fedex and u.p.s. on friday. law enforcement sources tell abc news the threat extends beyond stopping current shipments.

the u.s. government is reviewing packages from yemen as far back as two weeks ago. some may already be here. >> we need to make sure we get to the bottom of this, understand who is behind it and what else we might be facing. >> reporter: much of the cargo coming into the u.s. from overseas is not screened. u.s. officials are deeply concerned that al qaeda is trying to exploit the weakness. >> about 90% of that cargo is not screened. at least not screened in a fashion where you could determine what's inside the containers. >> this is a warning. al qaeda is obsessed with aviation. >> reporter: u.s. is sending a team of transportation security administration officials to yemen to review their cargo screening procedures. but the concern is not just reserved to cargo. this week, americans can expect to see enhanced security at airports, ranging from patdowns to more bomb-sniffing dogs. the concern runs deep. sources tell me the possibility of another attack is as high as it's been since 9/11.

♪ skinny so skinny >> we're seeing the co-mingling of two different worlds of entertainment and celebrity. this is a prime example of that. you have ashton kutcher and demi moore and possible ncaa violations that "usa today" as well as a series of other publications are reporting. according to them, the university of iowa basically admitted ncaa recruiting violations that involved the film stars. the violations involve the hawkeyes men's basketball staff. athletic officials acknowledge they allowed two high school recruits to meet kuchar and moore and several former hawkeye basketball players. this took place in iowa city last month. if you follow ncaa rules or watch the movie blind side, there are strict rules about

entertaining without tearing people down and calling them bs is what they said at maria schriever's conference last week. laying the law down. she's not letting that word on there at all. >> i didn't realize a lot of networks allowed the "b" word to fly openly. >> you hear a lot of b-bombs getting dropped. >> no b-bombs on the oprah network. >> no. last week we had the sad news, the two that were separating, miley cyrus -- her parents were separating. now randy travis and his wife elizabeth are divorcing after 19 years of marriage. apparently they've parted ways. she'll continue to be his personal manager. but for 19 years, this is a sad story in a sense they've had a 34-year business and personal relationship that began when he won a talent contest. his wife owned the nightclub where it all took place. they're asking for respect for their privacy during this time.

"world news now." >> quite a showing in a big political week. >> twice as many as glenn beck. something like 200,000 people were there. >> i'm rob nelson. >> i'm vinita nair. investigators are trying to figure out if more bombs are lurking off the foiled got plot. >> they say the bomb plot was narrowly averted. for part of the trip, those explosives were reportedly on jets. here's brian ross. >> reporter: senior american officials say they believe u.p.s. and fedex cargo planes were the real targets of the plot. >> at this point i think we'd agree with the british, it looks as though they were designed to be detonated in flight. >> reporter: at first, u.s. authorities thought the targets were two synagogues in chicago. but it turns out the shipments, the printer bombs, packed with clothing and books were sent to addresses that were eight years out of date. a detailed analysis of the

printer show a clever bomb that easily got by x-ray screening. for detonation, the bombmaker had added a circuit board from a cell phone which would have made it possible to set off the device with a phone call or by the alarm function of the phone. >> one scenario could be once a plane gets in cell phone range they could blow it up and film it as they blew it up. >> reporter: they believe ibrahim hasan al asiri is the al qaeda bombmaker responsible for the ingenious printer bomb. he's believed to have also designed the bomb used by the failed underwear bomber last christmas, as well as another failed attack on the saudi intelligence chief a year ago. >> the individual who's been making these bombs is a dangerous individual, clearly somebody who has a fair amount of training and experience. we need to find him and bring him to justice as soon as we can. >> reporter: so far, the only arrest made was that of a 22-year-old female engineering student in yemen whose name and

phone number was on the shipping document. she's been released because authorities say apparently the terrorists stole her identity and used it to confuse authorities. brian ross, abc news, new york. candidates are heading into their last full day of campaigning before voters cast their ballots tomorrow. meanwhile, a new abc news poll shows that likely voters favor republicans over democrats for the house, 49% to 45%. that puts raerngss in an even stronger position than they were when they swept into power in 1994. 57% of republicans and 36% of democrats say they're looking for new ideas from their leaders. if republicans are successful in seizing power, they insist their first order of business will be to repeal the health care reform law. jake tapper has our fact check. >> reporter: at a debate for the west virginia senate seat, republican john raisezy said

this about the health care law. >> you're going to have a patient bureaucrat relationship, because the first person that patient has to go to is a bureaucrat. >> reporter: does the new law mean the first person patients go to are bureaucrats? no. the panel he refers to will recommend ways to save money in medicare. his statement is just not true. what about this claim about the health care bureaucracy? >> if a landscaper wants to buy a new lawnmower or a restaurant needs a new icemaker, they have to report that purchase to the federal government. >> reporter: does the law really require all that paperwork? yes, it does. businesses were already required to report payments above $600 for labor. the new law adds reporting requirements for goods as well. to discourage cheating on taxes. this claim about democratic congressman joe donnelly's support for the bill is a quite popular one. >> donnelly voted for the pelosi health care bill that would cut over $500 billion from medicare.

president kennedy's speech writer, ted sorensen died at a new york hospital yesterday from complications after a stroke. he started working with jfk, the senator and became a policy adviser and close confidant. he also worked with robert kennedy. ted sorensen was 82 years old. a former leftist militant has been elected as brazil's first female president. she won a runoff yesterday with 67% of the vote. she will now lead a nation on track to become the world's fifth largest economy. the supreme court is set to hear arguments tomorrow in a case involving the $20 billion a year video game industry. a first for the high court. the justices will decide whether to uphold a federal court ruling to throw out california's ban on violent video games. the ban would prohibit the sale

connect you. one of the other big stories we're following this morning, federal investigators now say friday's foiled bomb plot was aimed at blowing up planes in flight rather than at two chicago synagogues. the investigation is far from over. >> reporter: president obama's counterterrorism adviser says the u.s. is not taking any chances. officials are looking for more packages, like the ones found on board cargo planes in the uk and dubai, carrying explosives. u.s. officials are working to better understand the threat. >> we can't presume that there are none other that are out there. what we're trying to do right now is work very closely with our partners overseas to identify all packages that left yemen recently. >> reporter: the packages found on u.p.s. and fedex planes originated in yemen. officials continue working with overseas partners to identify all packages that left yemen recently. they want to block the packages from entering the u.s. they believe petn was found in

the packages, the same substance used in the failed plots of the shoe bomber and underwear bomber. just a small amount of petn, even a few ounces can cause an enormous explosion. a suspect has been released by the government in yemen. u.s. officials believe they have contained this particular bomb threat but they remain vigilant. iraqi security forces stormed a baghdad church last night and freed more than 100 christians who had been held hostage for four hours. the standoff began after islamic militants burst into the church and began firing, demanding the release of imprisoned female insurgents. the death toll includes seven iraqi troops and five militants. police say they have finological a located that elderly woman that drove the wrong way down a busy interstate in philadelphia, causing several accidents. meg oliver has the details.

>> reporter: it was an unbelievable sight. she was driving down i-59 when across the median he saw a car going the wrong way. >> is she really doing what i think she's doing? because it didn't make sense to me. >> reporter: as he drove closer, fleming shot this cell phone video, honking his horn, trying to get the driver's attention. >> she wouldn't stop. i yelled at her again. she waved her arm at me like leave me alone. >> reporter: she was going about 45 to 50 miles aen hour. cars zipped past, barely missing the woman but causing four accidents, including a truck that smashed into a bridge overpass. remarkably, there were no serious injuries. police finally located the 84-year-old driver from wilmington, delaware. they tell abc news that her daughter recognized the car on the news and when she questioned her mother about it, she said she had no idea she was going

the wrong way and that she noticed some accidents on the road. her family took her keys and vehicle and are monitoring her closely. drivers 65 and older are 16% more likely to cause an accident than drivers age 25 to 64. elderly drivers are susceptible to pedal error like back in 2003 when and 89-year-old man drove into this california farmer's market, killing ten people. fleming says this experience was surreal. >> it was traumatic, you know? it was something i never ever thought i'd see. hundreds of people, they were extremely lucky they didn't die. >> reporter: meg oliver, abc news, new york. >> and that was meg oliver reporting. if you went to a halloween party last night and had a few cocktails you'll want to hear this story. a new study has found that alcohol is actually more dangerous than heroin and crack cocaine. total buzz still there. british researchers studied the effects of alcohol and illegal

government is reviewing packages from yemen as far back as two weeks ago. some may already be here. >> we need to make sure we get to the bottom of this, understand who is behind it and what else might we be facing. >> reporter: much of the cargo coming into the u.s. from overseas is not screened. u.s. officials are deeply concerned that al qaeda is trying to exploit the weakness. >> about 90% of that cargo is not screened. at least not screened in a fashion where you could determine what's inside the containers. >> this is a warning. al qaeda is obsessed with aviation. >> reporter: u.s. is sending a team of transportation security administration officials to yemen to review their cargo screening procedures. but the concern is not just reserved to cargo. this week, americans can expect to see enhanced security at airports, ranging from patdowns to more bomb-sniffing dogs. the concern runs deep. in fact, sources tell me the possibility of another attack is as high as it's been since 9/11.

a detailed analysis of the printer show a clever bomb that easily got by x-ray screening. for detonation, the bombmaker had added a circuit board from a cell phone which would have made it possible to set off the device with a phone call or by the alarm function of the phone. >> one scenario could be once a plane gets in cell phone range they could blow it up and film it as they blew it up. >> reporter: u.s. officials believe this 28-year-old saudi, ibrahim hasan al asiri is the al qaeda bombmaker responsible for the ingenious printer bomb. he's believed to have also designed the bomb used by the failed underwear bomber last christmas, as well as another failed attack on the saudi intelligence chief a year ago. >> the individual who's been making these bombs is a very dangerous individual, clearly somebody who has a fair amount of training and experience and we need to find him, we need to bring him to justice as soon as we can. >> reporter: so far, the only arrest made was that of a 22-year-old female engineering student in yemen whose name and phone number was on the shipping

document. she's now been released because authorities say, apparently the terrorists stole her identity and used it to confuse authorities. brian ross, abc news, new york. candidates are heading into their last full day of campaigning before voters cast their ballots tomorrow. meanwhile, a new abc news poll shows that likely voters favor republicans over democrats for the house, 49% to 45%. that puts republicans in an even stronger position than they were when they swept into power in 1994. our poll also shows that 57% of republicans and 36% of democrats say they're looking for appreciate ideas and a new direction from their elected leaders. if republicans are successful in seizing power, they insist their first order of business will be to repeal the health care reform law. they call it the epitome of spending gone wild. jake tapper has our fact check. >> reporter: at a debate for the west virginia senate seat, republican john raese said this

behind, basically what happened, the shark bit her, he grabbed ahold of the tail, the girl after she was bitten began to sink to the bottom. he grabbed r, brought her back up, put her on the boat. he grabbed the shark by the tail which made the shark let go. this guy is staying real low key but saved her life. >> is there any news on how her buttocks is doing? >> i'll check up on the buttocks. i'll make some phone calls. this makes me sad. an 87-year-old granny has been jailed from selling cocaine from her living room sofa. it gets worsrs they had video of all of this happening. apparently it was an undercover person who went to the back door. the deputy ended up buying a $20 piece of crack cocaine. she could have gotten a 25-year sentence. they are only giving her 18 months in state prison.

she's a re-offender. this has happened to her several times in the past. to me, there's something sad in the fact that she's 87 years old. >> still having to do that. >> right. >> rough world out there. we'll lighten the mood a little bit here. of course it's the day after halloween. let's do some halloween-related things here. there's a couple -- family out in surprise, arizona. everyone probably has the house in the neighborhood that's known for the elaborate christmas or halloween displace. this family goes all out every year. they've been doing it for years. they have the spooky noises. they have the fog machine, the inflatable characters, the animated -- - ey do this. the homeowner's association is cracking down. they sent the police out there to check up on them, saying look, to get rid of all this stuff. people have filed complaints again them. they spent $45,000 each holiday between christmas and halloween. now the homeowner's association are trying to crack down and get it shut down. lighten up there in arizona.
